Southern Pacific Daylight #4449 races through Michigan just west of Niles at the Portage Rd. crossing, on July 19th at around 2:15 pm. On its final leg of the journey from Portland, OR to Owosso, MI for Train Festival '09. The bridge in the distance is U.S. 31, just north of its junction with U.S. 12. On this day, 4449 was running 4 hours behind schedule due to some re-routing of the engine itself the night before after clearance concerns on the original route.

  • are u going to Film it tommarow?, i will be ridding it. be on the look out for a red head waving LOL

  • Probably going to try and catch it at this same crossing again, or on the bridge just east. I'll keep an eye out!

  • It's not as great as the 611, but at least it's still moving and not in a museum shut down somewhere.

  • A lot of people would agree with that. This has always been my favorite steamer but the 611 is a close second, and I'd love to see it running

  • nice! i was at this same crossing, it's actually just WEST of Niles. I was at this crossing (Portage Road) just a little bit more to the south, shooting across the marshy lake.(silver nissan)

  • Thanks for the correction. Yeah, we were wondering where you disappeared to. Bet it was a nice shot across the marsh. Thanks for the comment

  • I live a short distance form Niles, MI and I cannot believe that there wasn't any mention on the radio, television, or newspaper that the Daylight was coming through the area.

  • Before 1218's recent restoration for Norfolk Virginia Days... 611 would've by far been the selection for restoration of steam if NS was too.. But, the tables have turned, and its now 1218 that would go for it..

  • It rained all that freaking morning!

  • I bet there are a bunch!

  • i wounder if anyone is chasing the 765
