Against All Odds - Phil Collins, Jessie and Terry's Pain of Separation

Pro football player Terry Brogan (Jeff Bridges) is cut from his team, the "L.A. Outlaws". Aging, injured and in need of money, he agrees to help an old acquaintance, the shady gambler and nightclub owner Jake Wise (James Woods), find his girlfriend, Jessie Wyler (Rachel Ward) (daughter of the Outlaws' owner).
Terry goes to Mexico, where he finds Jessie living in Cozumel. She is suspicious at first because she knows perfectly well that Terry was sent by Jake, and wants to avoid him. Terry was about to return to Los Angeles but Jessie wants to know him better and invites him to have some drinks at her place; the two unexpectedly fall in love but Caxton, Mrs. Wyler, and not the least, Jake, are against that relationship.
A shootout occurs and Jake is killed by Jessie.
Guilty of murder, Jessie must agree to terms set by Caxton to avoid going to jail. They include returning to her estranged mother's side and ending her relationship with Terry.
Weeks later, Terry attends Caxton and Mrs. Wyler's real estate publicity function just so he can see Jessie one last time before beginning a new job with the Miami Dolphins football team. All he can do is stare at her from a distance. But he tells Ben that he and Mrs Wyler cannot control Jessie and Terry's decisions forever.
Phil Collins' song, "Against All Odds" plays as Terry and Jessie longingly and helplessly look at each other from the distance, as the credits rolls...

I remember watching this movie in the theater when it first came out in the 80's. It still tugs a bit at my heart.

Oh how much I admired Rachel Ward back then. So stunning! And what emotion still creeps up on me hearing this beautiful song of Phil Collins and seeing her trying to fight back her tears. Glad that I have this movie on dvd.
