This Video is presented in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of The World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) conference held in August 2009 in Auckland, New Zealand., and the 30th anniversary of The New Zealand Report a royal commission of enquiry into chiropractic in Aotearoa (New Zealand).

It is meant as an introduction to chiropractic in Aotearoa and a small portrait of one of its pioneers, John Nolan.

it was made by a group from the 2011 graduating class: new zealand college of chiropractic

"The first Chiropractor in New Zealand"

Aotearoa has a rich chiropractic history, but it all started with a chiropractic adjustment given by Dr Robert Skerritt in Belfast, Ireland, July, 1910. The patient was Thomas Giles. Giles stated, "I was greatly taken by what I heard and saw from him, and was greatly impressed as the rest of my life would show". Later that same year, Giles left for New Zealand.
After arriving, Thomas Giles set about finding out as much as he could about chiropractic. As a result of his correspondence with the Palmer School he was supplied with books and lectures which he studied to the best of his ability. While the material he received was not a correspondence course, he was able to put into practice what he read, and became such a success that his practice grew rapidly. He first started in Waiwera South, a small town south of Dunedin, but was later persuaded to move to Dunedin and he located at 49 Duncan Street. His practice kept growing and he soon realized that he would need further training, and decided to go to the Palmer School to study.
Giles needed someone to look after his practice in his absence, Henry Otterholt from Cheteck, Wisconsin, finally accepted the offer. Otterholt had planned to go to California after graduation, because one of his patients in clinic, a Californian, had promised him a busy location in California.
Henry Otterholt graduated 30 March 1914 and made his way to Dunedin, New Zealand, to operate the busy Giles practice—40 patients a day—on a contract basis. Thus Henry Otterholt became the first graduate chiropractor in Australasia, if not in the southern hemisphere. (Peters, 1995). While it has been noted that the first
chiropractor qualified to use x-ray in Australasia was Thomas Giles in 1915(arpansa.gov.au)

New Zealand now has 365 practising chiropractors throughout the nation. The College NZCC, celebrating its 15 year anniversary, is each year graduating more and more, highly qualified limited primary care chiropractors with deep understanding of the science art and philosophy that is chiropractic. These graduates go on to serve their communities throughout the world.
