"It's hard to remember now, but before Social Security, nearly half of America's seniors lived in poverty. After a lifetime of playing by the rules and working hard, there was no guarantee of a secure retirement.

"My grandfather, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a majority of Americans thought that was wrong.

"They believed that lifting our seniors out of poverty is a reflection of our nation's core values.

"That's why my grandfather signed the Social Security act seventy three years ago today. One of the great successes of the 20th Century, today Social Security lifts nearly 13 million seniors and 1.3 million children out of poverty.

"Back in 1935, a small minority did not share those values. They opposed the creation of Social Security because they believed that government should not have a role in ensuring a retirement with dignity or helping seniors stay out of poverty. They said, "You're on your own".

"John McCain agrees with that old way of thinking. Like President Bush, he wants to privatize our Social Security, turning it into a gamble with our futures, and making 8.6 million American seniors vulnerable to poverty. John McCain has even said Social Security is "a disgrace".

"I couldn't disagree more.

"Our Social Security isn't a disgrace; it's a compact, a trust between generations of Americans. It's a reflection of our values.

"On the 70th anniversary of Social Security, Americans stood together and said no to George Bush's attempt to privatize Social Security.

"On this anniversary, let's make sure John McCain hears the same message. Tell John McCain to keep his hands off of our Social Security."

  • Jive---I hate to say it, but you're jivin' My dad was killed in a car accident when I was 15, and my brother and sister were 12 and 5 years old. Social security kicked in for us, and made it possible for our mother to raise us like other children. This is just one example of the kind of thing s.s. critics never talk about. Social Security is NOT an investment scheme, it is a tax, and it's designed as a safety net to protect us all, young or old.

  • Get these ads back out so that people really understand how dangerous the Bush/McCain efforts to privitizs social security. Had they succeeded the majority of people would have gambled that security in the recent economic crisis. This was an effort no differenct than the preditory loan scandle that destroyed our housing market and lead to the recent crisis. Democrats and Obama need to make their ads deal with matters that directly effect people and stop the rebuttal nonesence.

  • @Centercentaur66

    I´m a danish man...

We have the best social security in the world, if u ask me.

And not having social security, is a true sign of idiocy, and lack of respect of your fellow man!

While u americans all watch some of your familymenbers die, a slow and painful death, because u can´t pay your bills, is your own fault.

If we just ask,we will recieve.

Social security, will ONLY work as non-profit, therefore goverment controlled.

Stop your fear of socialisme, please...

  • I find it so funny that the right wingers that oppose the social programs are usually in positions where they think they will never need them, but when the unthinkable happens they coming a running with both hands held out wanting the so called " socialism" benefits and I laugh at how silly they look because of all of their opposition toward SSI.

  • @haythem210 Heck NO!!! We are screwed. People fail to realize Roosevelt was horrible socialist

  • @StopSocialismUSA wtf do u think socialism is good ??? usa will fall down like other socialism countrys its just a matter of time

  • rosevelt is a itch

  • Thanks for the socialism!

  • Social Security is a PONZI scheme NOT "insurance".

If your contributions REALLY are put aside for your retirement, the money is there earning interest, right? If your money is in your "account," what difference would it make if your neighbor chooses not to participate in the program?

The truth is that Social Security like all taxes is spent immediately to fund the federal government. Social Security is nothing more than an accounting ledger with no money.

It is a SCAM to grow gov't!

  • All Americans loved President roosevelt .Most people were democrat back then it wasnt until now that republican party has reared their ugly heads up again and we must smash them again. The rich speak with their money and the poor man from his heart. I feel so sorry for this generation that the poor are not of a concern for them. Deal with a republican and you deal with the devil. STAMP OUT REPUBLICANS.

  • This is a Ponzi scheme. I would be willing to compromise. I won't pay anything else into the scam and I won't get anything out of it. Deal? Let's shake on it and make it official.
