Learn how to clear a clogged toilet with a closet auger in this plumbing repair video. Expert: Tim Flynn

Video transcript:

"I'm Tim Flynn and I'm the owner of Winters Plumbing and Heating in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Winters Company offers plumbing, heating, cooling. If you need service today; we're the business to call. My website is wintershomeservices.com. I'll be talking to you today about plumbing.
So sometimes the plunger doesn't work to do the job, so you need a closet auger. And this is what you'll find in most plumbers trucks and you'll find this at hardware stores for people that don't like to mess around. So, what you'd do is take the closet auger, lay it down on the ground, take the handle, and you would wanna be careful of this, if you have lower ceilings. Don't poke this through the ceiling. Take the closet auger and insert in. Start to turn the handle at the top and you'll see the handle going down into the bowl and what's going on is the metal wires going down the drain to clear the toilet. Then you want to draw it back quickly, see if the water goes down, which it is. Give the toilet a flush, while the auger is still in it. While this is refilling, one thing you wanna make sure of, is that this little plastic piece here is on the porcelain 'cause you don't want to scratch the porcelain with this head. Re- insert in, just to be sure, plus it cleans off the snakehead too. Let it fill back up again, let it flush, you see the water go down. Let your toilet be filled so you can see if it's fixed or not, done. You just cleared your own toilet."

  • I cleared my toilet using boiling hot water, poured it in (with the water supply off) and left it for 30 minutes. Then, I flushed at it was all ok!

  • Very helpful--good tip to use it "twice" to make certain, and to clean the enf of the auger. Hoping I can rent one from Lowes if they are pricey.
