Even better than killing rodents, use catnip that is grown in your own city farm. spread the catnip around the compost bins for easy repellent. This also might atract cats which will help repel mice as well. Why kill when we can repel with non-toxic means.

technically wouldn't the rodent be doing you a favor by breaking down the waste food in a more productive manner while providing you with manure. Why whould you want to destroy that relationship.

We don't want to encourage rats in urban backyards. They can migrate from the composter into homes, and, amongst other problems, can cause fires by chewing electric wiring. When you see a rat, stop composting, trap/kill the rat, before starting to add more food waste.
