Sara Gruen Ape House

Book trailer for Sara Gruen's new novel. In October 2006, Sara signed on with Spiegel & Grau for her next two books. The first, Ape House, features the amazing bonobo ape. By way of celebration, Sara adopted ten infant bonobos from the Lola Ya Bonobo Sanctuary in the Congo. They will stay with their foster mothers and be reintroduced into the wild as soon as it's safe—but Sara still considers them her babies. You can see them at play in this flip book or at the sanctuary's news blog.

In early June 2007, Sara was lucky enough to be invited to the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Iowa to visit their resident apes and learn about the collaboration between humans and apes in various fields, including language and cognition. Although Sara met all the apes, she spent most of her time with Kanzi and Panbanisha, two bonobos who are hugely proficient in human language as well as remarkable individuals who show great understanding and empathy of others. Sara was utterly charmed, and hopes the feeling was mutual. She left the Great Ape Trust believing that if this was a day on the job, she has the best job in the world.
