Martin Wechsler, Director of Programming at The Joyce, talks about the significance of The Joyce Theater. The Joyce has raised over $100,000 for Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA) by doing Audience Appeals and this is the first time The Joyce and DRA have co-produced a performance.
Dancin Downtown at The Joyce is a choreography and performance competition at the famous Joyce Theater. The event is co-produced by Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA) and The Joyce Theater. All proceeds from the event benefit DRA. This competition gives young dancers and choreographers the chance to be presented on one of the most acclaimed dance stages in the world in front of a prestigious panel of judges. The first Dancin Downtown at The Joyce was a huge success and raised $26,910 for DRA on April 20, 2009! The winner of Best Presentation was East Coast Movement's "Game of Life". The Choreographer's Choice Award went to Denise Wall's Dance Energy's "It's Gonna Be a Long Walk".
