The antikythera mechanism is currently housed in the Greek National Archaeological Museum in Athens and is thought to be one of the most complicated antiques in existence. At the beginning of the 20th century, divers off the island of Antikythera came across this clocklike mechanism, which is thought to be at least 2,000 years old, in the wreckage of a cargo ship. The device was very thin and made of bronze. It was mounted in a wooden frame and had more than 2,000 characters inscribed all over it. Though nearly 95 percent of these have been deciphered by experts, there as not been a publication of the full text of the inscription.

Today it is believed that this instrument was a kind of mechanical analog computer used to calculate the movements of stars and planets in astronomy. It has been estimated that the antikythera mechanism was built around 87 B.C and was lost in 76 B.C. No one has any idea about why or how it came to be on that ill-fated cargo ship. The ship was Roman though the antikythera mechanism was developed in Greece. One theory suggests that the reason it came to be on the Roman ship could be because the instrument was among the spoils of war garnered by then Roman emperor Julius Caesar. thanks!

  • Odd that the Sun & Moon appear to be going around the earth? I thought the Greek thinkers demonstrated a heliocentric universe. Perhaps the machine was made earlier?

  • @xringer43 yes who shall say.. Clever peoplethe ancients...

4 m Archimedes and Leonardo were top..

  • @xringer43 Perhaps the ancient Greeks did conceive of a heliocentric model of the solar system, however they may have realized that it is neither more nor less true than a geocentric system. In this case I think it seems natural that the sun and moon appear to be going around the earth, because this is the point of view of the user. I doubt the device was designed to be used by someone standing on the sun, therefore a heliocentric representation would seem very odd and rather meaningless.

  • @SMNONA100 Completely false. The Library's destruction was a drawn out, undramatic decay over centuries and was not destroyed by any religious mob. All the accounts of the Serapeum's destruction never mention any library. Because there was none.

The conflict thesis is a post-Enlightenment myth, perpetuated by Hollywood and tenured professors. But don't let that destroy your prejudice towards religious people.

  • Awesome,Now smash it down, and throw it back where it was found. so someone else can find it thousands of years from now and wonder how . LOL

  • @Ziggurathss lol I want to know what music this is aswell. It's beautiful! awesome video btw!

  • Wow, this is wonderful. Really. Thanks.

  • Julius Caesar has never been Emperor

  • @Loginameidk you would turn the handle located on the left side

  • did*

  • sorry but how was this complex mechanism run?

  • @codeman66lh67 WE LOST most of the West's accumulated knowledge in the repeated burnings of the Library of Alexandria by religious barbarians, including knowledge of the atom, or the solar system, the body, etc. Intellectual progress was set back 2000 years by the vandalism of ignorance, which seeks to destroy progress in any age. The Antikythera Device was not "ahead of its time," but belonged to an age of progress which was interrupted by conservative reactionaries. They are with us still.

  • @StimuLAZ unlike how many think greeks knew about the eliptical orbits&we knew that sun is orbiting around the earth.when the whole europe was saying that sun orbits around the sun and that earth is flat we talked them that they were wrong and we gave em proves of the perimentros of earth that had been calculated since ancient times by looking the shadow of a pyramid.thats why greeks were building also pyramids.europens laughed at us and after that many greeks were killed under the otoman yoke
