A 13-year-old boy was killed Saturday night after crashing his motorcycle during a race at the motocross track in Anchor Point, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Troopers didn't immediate release the teen's name.
The wreck didn't involve other motorcycles, said Trooper Mike Henry.
Troopers were alerted around 8:50 p.m., but the wreck happened about 8:30, Henry said.
"He didn't make his landing and was thrown from his motorcycle and impacted the ground very hard," Henry said.
Witnesses gave somewhat different versions of how it happened. One thought he landed on his front tire, almost vertically and went end over end. But from another witness, it seems more likely that the motorcycle bounced, fishtailed and threw him, Henry said.
The boy was wearing his helmet, and it was still strapped on when he landed. There didn't seem to be a mechanical problem with the bike.
Medics were at the track, as they always are during the races, and they tried to revive him.
Anchor Point medics took him in an ambulance to South Peninsula Hospital in Homer, where he was declared dead.
