No one has a better understanding of Six Sigma than George Eckes (consultant and Villanova University Six Sigma faculty member), whose consulting firm helped General Electric save millions of dollars by implementing the powerful methodology. Learn how you, too, can minimize errors and operate more efficiently through adoption of Six Sigma techniques. This is Part 1 of a two part series.
Villanova University is the worldwide leader in online Six Sigma and Lean education. Combining the valuable techniques of Six Sigma into one comprehensive program, the Master Certificate in Six Sigma can help organizations produce extraordinary results. Through courses in Six Sigma Green Belt, Lean Six Sigma and Six Sigma Black Belt, managers and professionals learn to improve processes that deliver results.
It is imposible in most industrial facilities to keep the tolerance in + / - six standard deviations, means an error in the order of 10 to the minus 10 . The 4.5 Sigma is more realistic, its 3.4 per million is in a single tail, for the accumulated probability from minus infinity to z= -4.5. In the other tail, for the accumulated from z=+4.5 to infintity is also 3.4 per million, so "six" sigma accepts 6.8 errors per million.

No matter how you look at it, every company, large or small, uses 6 sigma day to day, whether they know it or not!!!! Sometimes they need a little help from an outside source

Don't forget about the "1.5 Controversy". In reality, it shouldn't be called 6-Sigma, but rather "4.5-Sigma", as it all comes from the Z Function (Normal Distribution), and at 3.4 DPMO, the Z=4.5. The missing 1.5 was probably added for marketing purposes, as Six Sigma does sound better. That said, SS is useful in that it mentions the tools and how to use them together. The tools were already there, but it makes the emphasis on when it's appropriate to use them.

I am a SS Green Belt and Mfg. Engr by degree. The core of Six Sigma is the Process (transactional/manufacturing) focus. With all the paper work, and miscommunication, and finger pointing - you can expose all the BS and make a case. This is a method to expose waste and fine tune the future state that otherwise is "biz as usual".

if you really need six sigma it's because you were too stupid to see the waste in the first place. A little common sense and a few brain cells will solve most problems not a highly paid
sensei or black belt to teach you corporate bullshit. If I would buy a large company, first thing on the agenda would be to fire everybody involve in six sigma. Just paying these people is a huge waste of money right there.China does not give much shit about 6sigma and they're still invading the world.
