Lots of people think WW2 allegory can be found in the LOTR. Word of Tolkien is against this, and allegory in general, but I think you can clearly see the influence of Tolkiens WW1 experiences. The Scourging of the Shire in the books is heavily redolent of the disappointment the veterans of the trenches must have felt about returning home.

Last summer, I met up with 3 high school friends and we got dinner together. It had been 5 years since we graduated. As we sat around the table, I had the same feeling that I imagine each of the hobbits had from 1:02-1:30. It's like, "yeah, we're back here, but things will never be the same as they were in the past. Guess we've just gotta move on." One of the most touching scenes in the movie I think.

"We were home" this line and the way it is said - amazing and touching

Frodo: carried the One ring through hell to throw it in the most hostile environment known to man at that time - mountain doom. In the process he is being chased by both Saruman and Sauron.
Sam: provides huge psychological support to Frodo till their destination , while also protects him again a huge damned hungry spider in the way.
Merry/Pippin: Convinced the leader of ancient talking trees to eliminate Saruman. One of them fought in Pelennor Fields, while both in Black gate.
and now... back..

Pippin's face when Sam walks up is just amazing.
This is what soldiers coming home from war must feel like.
Willing to die for their countries and for their people to be free and live in peace but totally detatched from its ignorance and small-mindness about their travels and doings.
Tokien, and PJ, were/are geniuses.

Green Dragon is the most thoughtful scene in this movie. It's because of the Hobbits realizing that things have changed forever. The hobbits have seen a lot of things in the past months after leaving Shire. Things that other Hobbits are not interested in it. Life in Shire is very simple. The Hobbits have little concern for outside affairs. And here are four young Hobbits who are now considered heroes throughout Middle-Earth, but in their own home no one asks for them. It's only between them.
