#41 Vic Chesnutt - Supernatural

Si Vic Chesnutt a depuis longtemps gagné ses lettres de noblesse dans le paysage folk, sa récente tournée européenne a marqué une véritable consécration, s'accompagnant de moults éloges et marques de respect. On ignore si c'est l'effet Silver Mount Zion en backing band, l'effet Constellation ou simplement la reconnaissance mais une chose est sûre, tout cela est plus que mérité. C'est donc avec une timidité révérencieuse que nous avons abordé Vic Chesnutt pour cette 41e session acoustique du cargo.

Et puis là, tout s'est enchaîné, on ne sait trop comment... la distance a fondu aussi vite que la gêne.

Le bar de la maroquinerie nous a gentiment accueillis, nous offrant les couleurs et quelques lumières additionnelles pour achever de placer Vic Chesnutt dans un cadre lumineux. Un petit clin d'œil additionnel avec une exposition de photos de Renaud Monfourny. En arrière plan, une ancienne photo de Vic, casquette vissée sur la tête.

Ne prêtant aucune attention à l'agitation des cuisines et l'organisation du restaurant pour le soir, Vic Chesnutt transcende les trois chansons qu'il nous offre ce jour là.

Au jeu des cargo requests, le musicien ne s'est pas fait prier pour jouer Supernatural, demandé en mémoire d'un concert fabuleux à Bruxelles en 1998.

Du dernier album (North Star Deserter), il nous a offert le ténu Fodder on her wings et, à notre demande, le déchirant Everything I Say.

Une session qui restera sans aucun doute aussi gravée dans les esprits que le premier concert, généreuse et d'une humilité bouleversante.

Vic was raised in Pike County, GA in a family full of born-again Christians. He loved them deeply but decided at an early age that he did NOT share their religious beliefs. I don't think he ever wavered from this. To quote Vic, "The idea of divine order is essentially crazy". "I'm not a victim...I am intelligent...I am an atheist", off his 1st album. Off his last, "I don't need stone altars/to help me hedge my bet/against the looming blackness/that is what it is."

RIP Vic, brave soul.
