Hurricane Irene affected the Outer Banks of North Carolina by producing a significant sound-side storm surge. The Pamlico Sound was pushed over Highway 12 and was strong enough in a couple of locations to breach the island, causing small inlets to form. This video shows the cut along Pea Island - not too far south of Oregon Inlet. A temporary bridge was installed by the NCDOT and the Outer Banks were accessible to motorists beginning the week of October 10th.
