On Friday, October 15, the Museum of disABILITY History and the Training Center for Human Service Excellence celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting, tours, and refreshments. In attendance was New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, Assemblymember Mark J.F. Schroeder, State Senator William T. Stachowski, self advocates, members of the Amherst Town Board, and non profit and foundation leaders. The event was held in conjunction with the kick off of Disability History Week.
The Museum of disABILITY History is the only free standing museum dedicated to the history of people with disabilities. The Training Center for Human Service Excellence and the Museum of disABILITY History is now located at 3826 Main Street in Amherst (corner of Main and Maynard near Eggert). With twice the square footage of the previous location, the new Museum features several new exhibits, including an exhibit on the Kennedy family's involvement with the developmentally disabled and a new sports section that highlights Buffalo Sled Hockey.
