Niagara Falls, New York man killed in early morning shooting

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Cortez Hill, 28, died early Monday morning after police say he was shot while getting into his car.
Police were called to the 1800 block of Ontario Avenue around 3:30 a.m. Monday. They said it appears Cortez was shot while getting into his vehicle and suffered at least one gunshot wound to the upper body.

He was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Niagara Falls Police Chief John Chella said this comes less than a week after police took part in a city-wide sweep, arresting more than 30 violent gang members.

"Violence-wise, we are down this year. Unfortunately, with something that happened like last night just raises the awareness that violence does happen no matter what season we're in," Chella said.

Witnesses said they saw two black males leave the scene on foot.

Police have no motive or suspect at this time.
