Cowes Sailing Regatta, Saturday 6th 2011. On my RIB watching the Extreme 40's racing. Heading into Southampton water was a large oil tanker, Yacht approaching on his starboard side, tanker sounded horn numerous times but to no avail. Apologies about video, helming with one hand, surrounded by LOTS of other boats and trying to film / aim / zoom with the other. I understand no crew were seriously hurt, just the boat.

  • What no way more like ohh shit

  • you cant see it here but i another video you can see a guy jump overboard just before it hits,

  • stewie?

  • I was pretty close to this on another yacht. For those who don't know the Solent this area has a "Moving Prohibited Zone" around vessels this size, technically it is illegal and punishable to go within 1km in front, 500m on either side or 100m (?) behind this tanker. The tanker is in the marked channel and will be turning to the right to enter the Thorn Channel round the Brambles Bank (sandbank) to enter Southampton Water and reach the Port of Southampton.

There is no need to create such an expensive, complicated and potentially error-prone system.

Yacht racing has always involved keeping clear of obstructions, privileged vessels, etc. It is part of the game. This particular boat skipper made a mistake. There s no call fr a change in the rules.

Collisions of this sort are uncommon. Yes, they do happen, but rarely. I can't even count how many times I have raced in a busy channel. I have yet to see a collision of this sort personally

  • @vibratingstring

At least if they want to have both, the shipping lane must be off limits for small crafts.

Anyhow in this case the sailboat did a miscalculation and this is the result.

I think that if it´s this many sailboats in this arrangement, safety must have higher priority, and shipping lanes closed.

Who will pay for it? First companies, but in the end you :)

Information to vessels are easy, because every vessel over a certain size reports to VTS before entering.

  • thats marine time law i didnt make it common sense does not apply here just the law and the punch goes to the 120.000ton vessel if that boat was a rock or a iceberg will he still have hit it???

  • @dimaargghh Common sense dictates that a commercial 124,000 ton vessel has right of way over a recreational sailing vessel. Never, ever, ever under any circumstance put your crew at risk by playing chicken with a boat that takes over a half mile to stop (at cruising speed). The captain is lucky that nobody died, and deserves a good punch to the face from every crew member that he endangered.

  • when a sailing yachts and any motor boat even large cruises or cargo boats are in the way or there is a chance to collide THEY HAVE TO CHANGE COURSE not the sail boat

  • @vegard641

Say what? Are you freaking crazy? And who is going to pay for that? And how do you promulgate that information to all the vessels which may be in those waters that way? Hope that everyone checks in with the VTS?

It just doesn't work. Sounds simple from your armchair but that just isn't possible.
