Tying an Emerger for Tailwaters and Stillwaters. A very easy fly to tie in sizes from 18 down to 24. This fly works and is a constant fish catcher on the San Juan River, Frying Pan River, Henry's Fork and Crooked River. The rainbows just love this fly in the larger 18 - 20 hook size and the browns prefer 20-24 hook size. I use an Umpqua/TMC 200R hook, Iron Grey thread 6/0, brown fall deer hair, peacock herl and 1.5mm white foam strips. Tying two dozen takes very little time. I also change the thread to yellow 6/0 Uni thread for a lighter color fly for mornings. Use a 6x tippet when you fish with this fly as it is in the surface film and trout get picky about flies they can see for any length of time.
Tight lines and good hatches!

  • What color thread is best to use???

  • black or light gray silver, but remember to real silk. I use Tire Silk

  • does this fly work in the east. pennsylvania?

  • I might think the fly would work in any of the freestoners. Maybe tie it with a little bigger foam piece on top to hold it better in the surface in the moving water. I know two guides here at home that use it in a freestoner near here and do well with it on windfree days.

    Hope this helps.
