Produced by NC3D for AECOM, the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham, and the In-Town Transit Partnership, this animation follows a proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route linking five popular downtown destinations in Birmingham, AL. Created to demonstrate the advantages of BRT, key features of the system and highlight projected development along the route, this video allows Birmingham residents to envision exactly how BRT will look and function in their city.

This animation was produced using 3D Studio Max and custom green screen actors. One of most complex elements was combining information from so many sources to create a forward-looking mass model of downtown Birmingham. We combined existing and proposed project information including: new urban design standards, the Lyric Theater renovation, preliminary designs for a new multi-purpose stadium and entertainment district, massing for new neighborhood development, new UAB medical facilities and the proposed Railway Park, intermodal center and realignment of I-20-59.

  • BisonAp hit the nail on the head. I was born an raised there and Bham haven't changed since. That's why I got the hell out of there. I moved to Dallas Tx an there has been more construction here in the past 5 years than in Bham the past 25 years.

  • After Boston's "Big Dig", any chance of "burying" freeways are dead on proposal.

  • This is Birmingham, Alabama, right?

  • So pardon my pessimism, but I have good reason to be and truth on my side this time.

  • in the throes of "MAPS Kharma"...So forgive my lack of faith, as you put it, "Rtr87", but I've had years of experience with this town's political and social climate, while other cities flourish, it continues to flounder, Birmingham is its' own worst enemy, & we've no one to blame but ourselves for the pathetic quality of life we're faced with in what is supposed to be the modern era..This place and many of its' inhabitants are scared to death of real change that will benefit everyone here.

  • (part 3 of previous post) to become a modern, progressive city. There's way too much opposition to that, from within and beyond, & it's all by design. Hard to be optimistic about a town that has practically no autonomy, you know how much money this town's left on the table that it could have used to create a modern transit system long before now? Besides, its' leaders have proven over many, many years to be most untrustworthy, that's in part why the MAPS referendum failed in 1998. & here we are

  • (continued from previous post) with either an evasive or empty response from them.

Unless I'm mistaken, Atlanta's already enjoying BRT, as is Nashville. I just learned the other day that Albuquerque transit has joined the modern age with the addition of a commuter rail system, congrats to them all. I got nothing against the Railroad Park, it's beautiful and active, BRT or a streetcar line going by there would be a welcome addition, but, it's going to take more than this to get Bham (cont.)

  • "Chupacabra", reach out to the regional planning commission in the area of which you live about graphic designs, wish I could recommend someone definitively, but I can't at present. "The Rtr87" I admit my pessimism, but at least it's entrenched in a foundation of decades, not weeks/months/years, but decades of observed failures, disappointments & unfulfilled proclamations such as this BRT. I ask the regional planning commission by email every month about the status of this project. (continued)
