In the last few months, some insurance companies have sent letters to homeowners informing them about various discounts. The insurance companies have realized, along with receiving pressure from the State Department of Insurance, that having certain features in ones home that reduce the effects of damage caused from a hurricane's high winds may lessen the chance of claims.

In order to qualify for the possible discount, a homeowner must first contact his or her insurance agent and obtain the necessary paperwork. Next, an inspection must be performed by a South Carolina Safe Home Wind Inspector. Pete Loy, President of Citadel Enterprises, is one of these inspectors.

Once you have obtained the paperwork from your insurance agent, contact Mr. Loy at (843) 884-4303. The inspection takes about one hour. The standard fee for such an inspection is $150 and is payable directly to the inspector at the time of the assessment. Mr. Loy will rate features such as roof shape, condition of roof covering, materials used underneath the roof covering, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall attachment, and windows/doors/opening protection. Of course, some of these features can be added to the structure at the homeowners expense. The possible savings on your insurance premium can pay for the updates in the long run.
