A city symphony project created for my Digital Cinema Proseminar course at DePaul University.

We had to create a piece highlighting some aspect of the city with 20 shots, the camera locked down, and set to music. I focused mine on various flickering and flashing lights.

Just a brief breakdown of a few shots, for those interested. For the title, I took a light bulb and made it flicker by teetering the switch between on and off. I made it explode by hitting it with a screw driver from the side and masking it out (I used one with a very insulated handle so I would avoid being shocked). After that I took a 16 layer Photoshop file of the word "light" that I had constructed out of photo of the broken filaments and animated it in After Effects using a bunch of parenting rotating. While I was there, I bumped up the brightness, applied a glow filter, and turned on motion blur. About 6 hours of rendering later, I think it turned out into a fairly nice little title sequence!

Hmm, notable things... The bus shot features a fake white taxi. I added it so that it would cross paths with another car so as to emphasize one particular beat a little better. It originally appeared a few minutes later in the clip, but I moved it earlier, masked around it, and applied a second mask so that it would pass behind the car in the foreground. Similarly, in the close up of the ATM, I added a fake car passing in front of the camera. I did this to make the transition just a little smoother.

Other than that, the stained glass shots were divided into a few masked layers and positioned so that they would light up at different times instead of all at once; the stoplight was slightly time remapped; and I did quite a bit of color correcting in After Effects to try and make things look a bit more similar. Think that's it...

Anyway, hope you enjoyed!
