Abimelek governed Israel for three years but it wasn't a pleasant situation. After him was a man by the name of Tola. Tola was followed by Jair. The next judge was Jephthah. This man made an extremely rash vow which ended up costing him the life of his only child - a daughter. Again and again the pattern repeats itself. Once a judge dies, Israel sins against the LORD. The LORD raises up nations to oppress them. Eventually, they cry out to the LORD and He raises up a judge. The rebellious nature of Israel (and of all humankind) runs deep.
