Gus,

You were my first and best friend, which was a constant theme in your life. So many people have told me how you made them feel at ease by being a friend when no one else would be.

And what a difference it made in their lives, especially in one's formative years, away from home, at boarding school, in a new environment resembling "lord of the flies."

I would like so share some memories in chronological order:

Playing "horsebite" with your dad...a fun but painful game I do not recommend.

After summer visits to Alma you would return with pepperjack cheese, headcheese - I never understood the "cheese" part - and about 2000 bottlerockets ...bottlerocket wars ensued!!

Hiding from building supervisors after unleashing those same armaments on central park in NY from a 7th floor window...another not so great idea.

Leaving NYC to come live a more tranquil life in Los Angeles and immediately getting mugged, beaten and MY bike stolen along with a first edition Sony walkman...welcome to LA dude!

Getting your arm severed by barbed wire and a hay bailler, which soon became getting attacked by a shark off the coast of, San Diego, Honolulu, Santa Barbara or wherever that girl was NOT from.

Racing to school and crashing MY car...thanks bro! Lucky us...again no casualties, except one red two door.

The lost years in Los Angeles holding on to our youth as long as we could while you followed in your father's footsteps

And then the Virginia years of finishing school, working the land and slowly migrating out to Alma and taking care of your beloved Grandfather

Life is not fair and the good do die young, my brother. Finally, you seemed free of the demons that chased you in our youth. You found love, in Aimee, in the land you worked with such passion, and in all of those who loved you and appreciated your caring.

You will be sorely missed by all those who knew you.

D, I have no idea where your sneakers are but how I wish I could come over and play. You will always be in my heart smiling and laughing. It was a great ride that ended much too soon.

Rest in peace my bother until we see each other again.

BTW - Gus's Birthname was Jonathan David White
