Way Down Yonder In New Orleans was written by Henry Creamer and Turner Layton (not Cramer and Layton as shown on the label). This performance by the composer Turner Layton and his partner Clarence (Tandy) Johnstone must be the most definitive version. Layton & Johnstone were billed as "American Duettists with Piano". From an original 78 (Columbia 4329).

  • The other side of "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" is a little known number called "Perhaps You'll Think Of Me". "Birth of the Blues" is on Columbia 4398 and the other side of that record is "It All Depends On You". Both records were made in 1927.

  • Interesting to hear the original. However,Freddy Cannon made this immortal (in my humble opinion)

  • Wow, fantastic to hear the original!! Have got quite a few Layton and Johnstone 78's and several of Turner Layton as a soloist, but this is the holy grail!!

  • I agree

  • That was Excellent !

  • I have this one and if memory serves me correct, 'Birth of the Blues' is on the other side?. My copy of this record belonged to an old friend who bought the disc in 1927 - he was a huge fan.
