Good vid! All the batoning vids I've seen have like 7-9" bladed knives and I thought "not everyone carries one that big..."

@Supermassively Surplus KABAR's can be had for anywhere from $20 to $40 and I have used my service KABAR in just the same manner as is portrayed in this video for about 25 years now. Works really well!

Check out budk.com. Hundreds of knives of vaious sizes and styles. From hundreds of dollars down to less than ten bucks.I get most of mine there and I'm most often pleased.

@Supermassively cold steel makes a "recon" series that is perfectly priced for this style of knife, the recon tanto is good even though it looks like a funny shape it works great for batoning
-
@Supermassively make a rail road spike knife using a high carbon spike its surprisingly good steel

@Supermassively For a specific answer, try a Mora 840MG - It'll manage this and still maintain a really nice edge. Very good steel - hard to believe you can get them for as little at £12.

My only experience with camping like you do was with the scouts 36yrs ago. Its amazing how enjoyable it is to watch this stuff. Yearning for my childhood methinks.
Geat message for those who seem to think that you need to baton a 10" log with a 12" knife to start a fire.

@cyclist01222 - exactly, although sometimes you will have to, just to get to the dry centre wood, can still be done with a small knife though

Say I don't want to pay $200 for something I'm going to be running through a log and beating with a stick. Are there any inexpensive options that can survive this?
