...no they were started by French priests. Father Sorin was French.
The school was founded on November 26, 1842, by a 28-year-old priest, the Reverend Edward Sorin, CSC, and six Holy Cross Brothers who were members of the Congregation of Holy Cross, founded in Le Mans, France, in 1837.

dont really like notre dame dont really dislike them but i was wondering y r they the fighting irish if the only other thing with that name even though its pronounced differently is the church in france y arent they like the fighting french (other than the fact that the french lose at everything) was the school founded by irish ppl?
