This year's PURE 2011 Conference will be dedicated to the importance of "Story Telling" in a dream society which is quickly outpacing the information society. We have an impressive line up this year including a Hollywood Star, Music Industry Mogul, Wildlife Photographers, Film Maker, Travel Journalist, forward thinking Private Travel Designers and Serge Dive, CEO & Founder of PURE Life Experiences.

Unlike many other industry analysts, PURE does not believe that commoditisation itself is the darkest threat to our industry at present, but rather the resistance to recognize the shift from the fading Information Age to the new Dream Society.
This new Dream Society is no longer based on information procurement but on the trade of emotions and dreams. Today unique selling propositions are no longer measured in usefulness and quality of information but on how profoundly they can touch our emotions and provide us with a feeling of self-completion. This Dream Society represents a new era, an Age where story telling rules and where story-tellers are the new kings.
If some travel professionals still complain that their customer treats their high valued itineraries as mere commodities and feels no shame in shopping for better deals, it is only because the professional has yet to embrace the new paradigm shift towards the Dream Society. Customers no longer see information as something worth paying for, but they crave the consumption of powerful and emotional stories - with themselves and their loved ones at the centre. The reality is that unless their thirst for the emotional is quenched, they will keep shopping around and often, unfortunately, trade down to the best value for money deal as an alternative option.
It is no surprise that the Experiential Travel industry was born as the Information Age was coming to an end as it was never suited to succeed during that period. Contrary to the procurement of mass tourism products, the creation of happiness through engaging journeys is never based on the knowledge of every detail in advance and therefore the removal of all uncertainties. It is about taking part in unexpected adventures -- in latin adventurus literally means "about to happen"- that unfold before the eyes of the traveller. "Tourists don't know where they've been, travelers don't know where they're going", as Paul Theroux reminds us.
The great news is that Experiential Travel - well scripted and effectively marketed (intriguing trailers rather than detailed itineraries please) - has the potential to be one of the leading and most profitable industries in the new Dream Society. Its basic mechanisms are indeed very similar to those involved in story telling:
• desire to step into the unknown
• confrontation with unexpected choices
• acceptance of the foreign as one's own
• overcoming hurdles with the view to complete a journey towards self actualization.
