I lived at Santispac for 20 yrs and all neighbors reported gill netting. It was enforced for 1 month by the Armada de Mexico !

People need to make a living. Locals would make more money catering to tourists who rod and reel fish or spear fish while freediving. The hookah divers in the video have limitless time under water. While Freedivers are limited to 60 second dives because they must hold their breath during a dive.

This video points out a tragic yet common depletion of the sea of Cortez. Commercial exploitation of any natural resource can and frequently does decimate Ecosystems. Additional restrictions on commercial take will not save the sea of Cortez. Enforcement of current regulations and crack down on corruption can save it.

Gracias for providing this video regarding the unlawful fishing that is prevalent in the Sea of Cortez. Unfortunately, the "pangeros" only know fishing as their primary occupation. The Mexican government needs to create alternative jobs for these people. Perhaps a program whereby the "pangeros" would be trained to be involved in protecting the reefs and the fish in the Sea of Cortez AND be paid a fair wage for their involvement would help turn the situation around.

That makes my blood boil with anger STUPID people dont realize there putting everything down there into extinction! Im from Baja I never kill anything that I wont eat. You got to leave something for future generations ripping the veins out of mother earth! GOD help us all!
