Redman Point-Loosahatchie Bar Environmental Restoration Project
The main purpose of the project is to restore water flows to more than 11 miles of degraded secondary channel habitat for the benefit of two federally listed species, pallid sturgeon and interior least tern, and other recreationally and commercially valuable wildlife. Rock dikes installed in the 1960s for improved river navigation have caused significant loss of extrachannel aquatic habitat, restricted passage of riverine fishes, degraded riparian wetlands and decreased productivity of nesting interior least terns by providing a land bridge for predators. The project is expected to attract significant public attention because of its proximity to a major metropolitan area and because the restoration will greatly improve fishing, boating, birding and other public recreation opportunities.
