  • One of the problems that scuttled the program, was that the pilots of these particular aircraft seemed to be particularly suggestible to ideas of ending the war, and of hedonistic persuits. I heard that on several of the briefings the pilots started to bang their desks in unison, the commander describing them as descending to a circle of rhitmdrumskin hammershkiens.

  • the brave men of the volkswaffe had there wallets and watch and any car keys handed to the head mechanic in case of interference to the magnetic compass. They were then given several scnaps and two meters of toilet paper , a cheereful heil and into battle .sadley all that is left now are some rusting rear bumpers which can be found in the barvarian black forrest

  • @kotangens Volkswaffe were basically flying beetles

  • my grandmother flew a b17 then, she has horrid memories about her encounters with those volkswaffe; they could be flown by just anyone over the age of 12 she said, and took a tremendous toll on allied bombers

it is said german scientists, around the end of the war, where working on a volksc-series....freaky!

  • "Volkswaffe"?

It is still "Luftwaffe" ("Air Force" rather than "People's Force").

  • It had excellent Handling, Erich Hartmann took one up and said while the 109 would remain his favourite this would be his second choice.

    A truly remarkable VTOL aircraft.

  • Besides takeoff and landing on roads the Volkswaffle floated on water for amphibious landings after being launched from U-boat decks. It could land in the ocean beside the U-boat and be winched back up on deck. They could insert special forces or conduct raids on the US. Production was too late for Germany to employ them in force before the war ended. Postwar, WW-I aircraft engines lacking thrust for flight replaced the rocket engines. The project then morphed into the Volkswagen automobile.

  • probably the least known fact about the Volkstaffe was its unique ability to concentrate fire on a B17. This was made by accelerating past a bomber then slamming the Volkstaffe into reverse and hosing the aircraft with bullets

  • I guess the rumor of flying cars is true then. I heard some fantastic story about WWII British Scientists working with Magicians or wizards from Hogworth..or some thing...on flying cars? Amazing...Must be true!

  • I'm sorry, but I have two restored Volkeswaffes that had evidence of combat damage when I got them. The seat cushions had evidently been destroyed during high "pucker factor" situations. In fact, one set of cushions is mysteriously missing. As for being unreliable in flight, yes, they were subject to engine failure, but you could either throw out a set of sky hooks, or hold the Volkeswaffe up in the air by holding on to the floor boards.
