My 7 year old Brittany dog had an encounter with a coyote in the Black Hills, SD in June 08. Looks like a love or play connection to me but you be the judge.

  • This is a luring technique used by Coyotes as well as wolves. I think it was a good thing you called your dog off when you did. The Coyote wasn't attempting to attack (if it wanted to it could have, they are faster than the majority of domestic dogs, Greyhounds & Anatolian Shepherds are a couple exceptions, also Irish Wolfhounds). I think it was luring it toward cover.

  • bonham has it right. These animals aren't looking for friends, they are living a hard life, and opportunistic feeding is key.

Canines are astute assessors of behavior, and key on weakness, sickness, or unwillingness to fight. Spotting their opening, they'll attack.

Notice when the dog was returning, the coyote chased.

No need to kill them for they are important in keeping rodent population in check, just be careful, and always make them unwelcome by you.

    Observe from a distance.

    Very cool

  • Love this footage!!! Cool canines, domestic and wild!!!

  • I love yo dog

  • Good thing your dog listen's to you. That Coyote would of sure lured her out and maybe tried to eat her.

  • Never trust a coyote, one of the ranchers nearby us had a Rottweiler, male, that got lured away. He was found the next day torn to shreds and partially eaten. They are territorial and if there is a pack, they make sure others don't infringe. A lone coyote would have stayed nearby and played, this one definitely was luring. Good dog, most Brittany's are too good nature-d to think anything bad would happen. You probably saved your dogs life.

  • Good thing you knew what you're doing. Coyote's are clever animals that often isolate their prey by luring them to their pack.

  • Good dog. You were lucky to get her back. I'm pretty sure my Brittany, who's not been loose in an uncontained field, would have been to excited to heed my callback.

  • tha is a LARGE coyote for the black hills..... was either mixed with something or was a wolf....they're out there too... grandpa has seen a few recently.

  • the same thing happened to my dog only she was young and didnt listen so well then. she started playing with it then followed it into the bush, naturally i was scared, chased after her, couldnt find her. ten minutes later she found me, completely unscathed and happy as can be.

ive only ever heard of the luring technique being successfull from jack london novels or hunters who think they are the devil reincarnate. ppl and dogs have been killed by wolves/coyotes tho but in deliberate attacks

  • We had our first encounter with a coyote this morning with our dogs. One's a springer spaniel and the other is a wolfhound mix. They started barking like I've never heard before and took off after the coyote like a bat out of hell. The coyote then stayed at the edge of our bush and seemed like it was waiting for the dogs to come after it. Luckily we have a invisible fence at the bush line which both dogs dare not cross. Great listening dog you've got. I can only hope ours will listen as well i

  • @polska2934 - you are right... it's possible the coyote wanted to breed.
