Hawaiian Goose kids at the Hakalau Research Station, Big Island Hawaii.

The station has a breeding program, and the families of geese often come visit the house on their own.
The juveniles approached without any prompting.

Do NOT try this on your own if you see them in the wild. This is a special location and circumstance. Doing otherwise could get you into loads of trouble.
You have been warned.

Everything you see in this video was conducted with the permission of and under strict supervision of the University of Hawaii.

Again, NO negative comments please! I am doing this for the fun of it and to share some of the cool places I've been.

  • Aww the Nenes are so cute! There are a lot smaller than their Canada geese relatives (of which they descended from) and have very different honks but they are still from the same common ancestors. It's so sad that many people hunted them to near extinctions and I hope their population increases again in the future so that more visitors to the islands can see them :)

  • Yes certainly cute. These are smaller in general but they are also juveniles so have not finished growing yet. Certainly we're all glad that the populations are coming back. :) Thanks for watching.

  • Very nice video of the Nene with the sweet ki ho'alu in the background. I thought I heard a Zebra dove in the background??, but maybe it was the Nene's. Mahalo for the smile it brought me and for the work you are doing to assist in their breeding. I haven't been to Kaua'i in almost 4 years now, but saw them there quite a bit.
