Soarin'

This is my first attempt at writing jazz, and I have to say that it was interestingly difficult. When I went to the New York State Summer School for the arts, School of Choral Studies at Fredonia NY in 2009, I decided to write a song to serenade this really cute redhead girl just like the one Charlie Brown desired. It was originally titled "Claire de Luna," which is french for "Moonlight," and it was supposed to be sung in Spanish, but my ability to write lyrics in Spanish failed, and I stopped developing it. I did eventually sing a different tune with the same name to her, and to this day she will not re-friend me on Facebook. I am still developing Claire de Lune to be pre mired sometime in the future.

Soarin' was actually finished during Dr. Taggart's first semester freshman composition class MUSC 1236. I took the theme from the first draft of Claire de Lune and modified it to create an AABA melody as an assignment. It was received well, but it was never seen again until I started going to Jazz Nights at Fletcher School of Music - ECU, where after spending a couple nights attempting to solo on trombone inspired me to premiere Soarin' and to see what it was like working with a combo in a different perspective. I highly recommend, to anyone studying or is interested in composition or jazz in general, should come to a session and participate, or just sit and listen, because every time is different, just like you would expect at a jazz club. I want to recognize the Kropp Combo, the Taub Combo, Kipp Hodnett, Alyssa Trapani, Rex Richardson, Will Carrigan, Alex Taub, and Andy Kropp for helping me put the chart together, and Marc Taggart, Dominick Grande, John Blackstock, Steven , and the cute redhead girl for helping me write it.
