Justified cruelty is still cruelty. I'm willing to bet that most cruel people attempt to justify their cruel actions to themselves and to others. "I'm just telling the truth" is a rather common justification for cruel comments.

The film is very powerful all through and still moves me to this day.

Forgive me if I sound insensitive but for all of you commenting that what Johnny said was cruel and hurtful, did you ever think that maybe he was telling her the truth which can sometimes be brutal and ugly?

I've always been ambivalent about Johnny. He's very cool, very intelligent, witty, a brilliant talker, an omnivorous reader and autodidact. But he's usually obnoxious and often cruel, as in this scene. What a heartless way to treat this woman.
