Flights across the European continent have been grounded due to a cloud of volcanic ash which has blown across from Iceland.

So what would flying through a cloud of ash be like?

Sky's reporter, Alistair Bunkall visited a flight simulator to find out.

  • Not a problem for the concord.

  • @agun17 , It wouldn't be a problem for the Concord during it's cruise stage, because it flies at an altitude that is far higher then the volcanic ash can go to. However, during it's climb and acceleration stage, it would have to go directly trough the altitude at witch the volcanic ash would be found at.

  • This shows why the "chemtrails" wheeze cannot work, for metallic dust, whether "chemtrails" or volcanic, rapidly wrecks gas turbine engines

A jumbo flew through an Indonesian volcanic ash cloud a quarter century ago which stopped all four engines, but luckily they inevitably sank beneath the cloud and eventually restarted their engines, which lasted long enough for them to reach the nearest airport - but those motors were FINISHED

  • @stephqaz Hopefully the engineers remembered to put oxygen in the tanks rather than nitrogen! This happened on an executive jet aircraft once, a Lear Jet, the aircraft had suffered explosive decompression, the crew donned their masks but it was Nitrogen they breathed not O2. They quickly died and a military jet was sent up to look at them, the aircraft was on autopilot and the military jet pilot reported he could see the crew slumped with their masks on. The aircraft crashed near Iceland.
