Women from the US traveled to Honduras to volunteer with Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) through SHI's Smaller World Tour program.
The group worked with families in the rural villages of El Tule and La Majada located in the Chinda region of the Santa Barbara District in northern Honduras. Five villages in this area work with Sustainable Harvest Honduras thanks to support from the Trinidad Conservation Program.
The group of US women worked side-by-side with local families on a variety of projects aimed at improving quality of life while restoring the natural environment. The group saw how the Honduran families embraced their first year of work with SHI by building raised beds for garden plots, portable chicken coops, wood-conserving stoves, natural fertilizers/compost and organic pest control methods. Several afternoons were organized around craft projects for the Honduran woman with the goal of fostering collaboration and conversation between the two groups.
The women ended their trip with a little R&R in Copan where they visited the ancient Mayan ruins, zip lined through the canopy, toured Macaw Mountain Bird Park and local hot springs.
