It was totally worth the (less than) 1% of the overall federal budget to keep NASA operating during the time of the shuttles.
That said, the shuttle is totally out of step with our time. The shuttle was built over 30 YEARS AGO! A time when Americans dreamed of reaching farther and using our brains and ingenuity to lay foundations for ourselves beyond Earth. When we were willing to spend time, money and even lives if necessary to keep ourselves ahead of the world. THOSE DAYS ARE LONG OVER!
