"There are a bunch of different rights and duties that as parents we have but we may not really think about. One important right would be the right to establish the primary residence of the child, and usually one parent is going to have that right as opposed to both parents sharing the rights. Other rights would include the right to make educational decisions on behalf of the child; the right to service earnings of the child; the right to consent to medical, dental and psychiatric or psychological treatment of the child. You also have duties. You might have the duty to provide support and care for the child, the duty to provide moral training for the child, the duty to inform the other parent of significant events concerning the child.
The court anytime decisions are made concerning the child, the benchmark for their determination is going to be what is in the best interest of children. And so when those rights and duties are allocated between the two parents, the court is going to really closely examine what is truly in the child's best interest."
