CENTRAL SAANICH - First Nations languages are in a critical state.
That's one of the findings in a new report by the First Peoples' Council.
The report was released Friday (April 30) and shows there are a shrinking number of fluent speakers of First Nations languages remaining throughout B.C.
The loss of First Nations languages is the result of several factors including generations of children not learning their First Nations language as their mother tongue from their parents or grandparents, many of whom are residential school survivors or were effected by residential school traumas.
Tsartlip Elders Tom Sampson, Ivan Morris and John Elliott are among dozens of 'Language Champions' around the province who are working to protect the past.
