IN CINEMAS JULY 29
'Tiny' 14 year old Arrietty lives under the floorboards of an old house with her father and mother. Their peaceful life is dramatically changed when the ever curious Arrietty accidentally allows herself to be seen by Sho, a sickly but well-intentioned 12 year old boy. The fledgling friendship between the two lonely children causes Haru the housekeeper to become aware of the borrowers' existence. The family are forced to choose between staying in their well-established home or leaving for the uncertainty of the great outdoors.

Featuring the voices of Saoirse Ronan, Mark Strong and Olivia Colman.

  • The reason why this version is favored over the American dub is because as with MOST American dubs of foreign releases, the acting is ham-fisted and over the top in order to appeal to children. Most American dubbing has lost any form of subtlety in favor of talking down to children presuming that they can not discern the difference. The problem is that a generation of children raised on low standards crap will eat up the American dub so it becomes a vicious cycle. Ghibli films deserve better.

  • Personally I think the American version is way better. This Arriety sounds too weak/vulnerable. I guess that could be the point of her character since shes's small, but the American voice actress adds so much spunk to the character, I like it a lot more. And don't diss Disney for distributing Ghibli's film in the US. Without them noone in the US would even see these movies. And don't forget Disney used to make beautiful traditionally animated movies too. So WTF is with the Disney bashing?

  • I prefer this one over the Disney dub.

I love English accents and it fits the setting unlike an american accent (since the creator of The Borrowers is in fact English). Also the voices sound better, not so over the top like the Disney dub that just sounds annoying.

  • @xxbluejay21 the thing is arriety is a uk story so this one sounds more legit.

  • What I dont understand is why they did an American version. Americans understand British English perfectly fine right? It makes no sense to me.

  • @xxbluejay21 YOU DO NOT DISS SAOIRSE RONAN!

  • A weaker ghibli film but still a fun watch.

  • @Syedaxox Well, yes the U.S. is not the only country that got an adaptation of Arrietty, just like all the other Ghibli Films, but U.S. is the only country that got a changed version. Call me stupid, but every other country managed to make their adaptation of this film without any changes whatsoever and I think with that they were much more respectful towards it, than Disney. But the movie probably still retains the "Ghibli feel" to it (haven't seen the whole US dub of the movie)

  • @droppingpenny they just changed a couple things then. that was bound to happen. north american culture is different from japanese. I think the movie was adapted for other places too, not just by disney for the US. given everything, they seemed to be respectful towards the original (note: I haven't actually SEEN the original, but the north american version felt to me like it still had that studio ghibi- feel. correct me if I'm wrong)

  • @Syedaxox They added a voice over, changed the character's names, replaced parts of the soundtrack and replaced the ending song with this: /watch?v=XDr58CXEa0Y

  • @droppingpenny if you don't mind me asking, what parts did they change?

  • @Soooooooooooonicable I don't think they're giving things away. this version and the american version both give away the same amount of plot
