Most of the crap churned out today under the guise of 'music' is just soul-less and bland. The 70s/80s were the best times to be a teen/20-something.Jimmy Somerville was abloody GOD with his falsetto vocals and his sheer enjoyment of what he was doing.Smalltown Boy,whilst hyped as a 'gay anthem' was actually an ode to anyone escaping the drudgery and conformity of those pockets of society where to be seen as different brought only grief.Sadly those lyrics are all too relevent today.Jimmy, you rock

erasure, bronski beat, depeche mode, communards, yaz, - so many incredible melodies and amazing lyrics from just a few guys and a couple of synths (maybe a real clarinet or oboe in there too, maybe not); and that was just a teeny tiny slice of 80s pop - what the hell happened to music the past 20 years??
