Searching for the elusive Chinese Catfish Pond of the Sierra. In the 1860s, Chinese men working for the Central Pacific Railroad stocked a pond near where they were building America's first transcontinental railroad. Concerned about the availability of fresh fish for the Asian workforce, catfish were planted in local ponds near Donner Pass. Winters bring 30 + feet of snow and long-term droughts can dry up these isolated bodies of water, but the descendants of those first planted catfish survive. Video by Mark McLaughlin.
