You can knock the gardener out in the original C64 version but he has a lot more health and he might do more damage but I think he runs slower. He still does sometimes drop roast chicken or power ups if your lucky. It's a fun sort of challenge anyway while knocking out the dogs and if you go straight instead of turning left to the path with Malice then you can find the Gardener and fight him alone.

You still have to deal with the dogs and the Malice chase as Reinhardt or Carrie in this game.

This particular little chase/escort reminds me very much of the movie "House of Dracula," where frankenstein's monster does, in fact, chase down Larry Talbot in the back yard of a mansion owned by the Count.
