Judge Napolitano's Verdict: Free Speech Must Be Truly Free

On September 17, 2007, at 12:00PM, U.S. Senator John Kerry addressed a Constitution Day forum at the University of Florida in Gainesville, which was organized by the ACCENT Speaker's Bureau, an agency of the university's student government. Toward the end of the question and answer period, University police forcibly removed Andrew Meyer, a 21-year-old fourth-year undergraduate telecommunications student, from the forum, restraining him through direct force and drive stunning him with a Taser.

Judge Napolitano's Verdict:

"Free speech must be truly free, and it can't be censored by the Government and you can't be arrested by the police if the organizer of the speech doesn't like what you are saying.

Just because one student's questions were too long, too contentious or too loud does not mean the police can arrest him, they can't.

A taser is a deadly weapon, seven people have died from police tasers in the past three years, police cannot use deadly force unless the person is demonstrating a threat to their lives.

So next time Senator Kerry comes calling on a college campus, ask him any questions you want.

I'm Judge Andrew Napolitano and that is my verdict."

Right on Judge! Nice to see a genuine Constitutional scholar weigh in on this even though he's only stating the obvious. The man certainly knows what the Constitution is all about meant to accomplish; to keep the power relationship balanced in favor of individual rights!
