The first number, 4xxx/5xxx/6xxx simply stands for the generation, 6 being the newest. For each generation, the cards are sorted in performance classes with the second number, for example x4xx/x6xx/x7xx. Finally each performance class is sometimes sorted in different sub-performance classes, like xx50 or xx70, which is basically the same card with tweaked clocks or whatevs. So basically, the higher the number, the better the card, although not comparable between generations

I don't know man, your system should be able to handle it. It will always be a bit laggy, but with the right settings it should be playable.

How does amd rank the cards by number? Ive seen this card preform better then one of the ones in the 5000 series
With that said, should i get the AMD 6850 from sapphire or get the ati radeon HD?

Usually the newer generation is a bit faster than the old with the same numbers, for example 5870 is faster than the 4870, however, 6870 is not faster than the 5870 for some reason. Generally the 6xxx-series are slower but more energy efficient.
As for your question, there are many different manufacturers which makes cards with the same numbers, and it doesn't really matter which one you go with, they might have different clocks or coolers which perform differently.

@vibyjocke Hey, do you think I could run Battlefield 3 on a Athlon II X3 triple-core and Radeon 6450? I know the minimum requirements ask for 2GB RAM, a dual-core at 2.7GHz and 3rd gen graphics card from ATI. Just asking to make sure.

My guess would be that it would run pretty bad, but of course, on low enough resolution and all settings on low it would be playable. Here is a guy on YT running it: /watch?v=bzayxLaLX2I and as you can see it's pretty laggy, and multiplayer would be even worse.
