CAMPBELL RIVER -- Traffic enforcers on the North Island are now utilizing a new tool to spot unlicensed and uninsured drivers on local highways. The "Automatic License Plate Recognition System" or ALPR uses cameras mounted on top of police vehicles to spot violators as officers do their regular traffic patrols.
The cameras can read up to 3,000 plates per hour, automatically running the license plates through the on-board computer system and audibly notify the officer when a suspicious plate has been spotted.
The cameras work in every type of weather conditions and can read plates on vehicles travelling as much as 240kph as well as seeing in the dark through infrared technology.
