Jay Root of The Texas Tribune, Christy Hoppe of The Dallas Morning News, and Jason Embry of the Austin American-Statesman discuss how the issue of race has been covered in the context of Texas Governor Rick Perry's campaign for the GOP presidential nomination. The discussion was framed by a question from moderator James Henson about coverage of Perry in the wake of the October 1 Washington Post story about a hunting lease used by the Perry family that had been assigned a racist name. Recorded October 6, 2011 at the University of Texas at Austin. Event was presented as part of the Texas Politics Speaker Series and produced James Henson for the Texas Politics Preoject.
The US Constitution intended to protect the People from the powerful States, not the States from the People. We, the People need to forget “State Rights,” and fight harder than ever for “Individual Rights” while we still have some left. Happy Day of the People, i mean, Columbus Day.

Many Southern Confederate-Secessionists (Rick Perry & Pals), fight for “State Rights,”attempting to dismantle the rights of individuals to assemble and form labor unions and do away with American institutions that prohibit them from keeping slave-like employees at their own States. Happy Day of the People, i mean, Columbus Day.
