A tactical examination of Peter Joppich's Foil counter-attacks. Not all of these clips have replays so I recommend watching them once, reading the analysis and then watching again several times until you see everythng. Enjoy Everyone!

  • Joppich counter attacks are so efficient because -as i see in the 2 first clips- the way he sweeps his blade forces his oponent to advance with his arm almost sticked to his chest, making Joppich counter attack easier. In fact, as seen of the first clip, the russian could have touched, but the referee would pronounce a "wrong attack" (i dont know how this is said in englsih, exactly) and counter attack from Joppich anyway, because the russian delivers his arm from the back (my english is poor!)

  • @neverenough1984 Yes you're right, that's one of the ways that Joppich sets up his counter-attack, but as the video shows there are other ways.

If he only had one way to set it up, it would become predictable and wouldn't be effective. As for "Wrong-Attack" we tend to use the French "Attaque non-correct" :)

  • The comments are really interesting. Do you have other videos? It would be great to have the clip first, the analysis then a replay or two of the same clip. Just a thought ...

  • @weekneeship

Hi Week, I've been gathering quite a lot of feedback on this video in preparation for another one. This is my first video I've done, but because this one has gone quite well I intend to do more. Your comment mirrors what others have said, so I will be doing something of that sort for the next one :)

    Thank you for your interest

  • as i see the second one now: the same thing. he didn't get the blade. what would he do now? running away? too late... so he steps forward and tries to find a way to hit the attacker. that way he preserves a chance for the point. better than 90% of getting hit. do not think because he is a three time world champion everything he does is planned and part of his strategy. he is an intuitive fencer. his strength is mostly his speed, his body control, his "instinct" and his amazingly strong nerves.

  • the first example is NOT planned. that's all to say about it... it's just his incredible intuition that he instantly knows that now as he didn't get the blade - that he indeed wanted - has only one chance a NOT planned counter attack. it is actually more a defense action then an attack. THIS you cannot learn and you also cannot learn to awoid running into it... it is about intuition and extremly well reaction-time. you simply need a feeling and an "instinct" for it.

  • yes yes, that's exactly what i was trying to say. In spanish we say "ataque no correcto" hehehehe :D

  • these tactical reviews are really useful for us as fencers! great job!
