One of the most spectacular traditions of Europe takes place each summer in several small villages of Galicia.

Hundreds of wild horses are brought down from the mountains where they live the whole year to cut their hair and to be marked. After that, they are released again.

In the small village of Sabucedo this task is made hand-to-hand by the "aloitadores" immobilizing the animal without ropes, sticks or equipment.

The tradition possibly comes from pre-Roman ages. The story goes that in a devastating famine year the villagers offered the horses to a saint. Since then the horses graze at freedom and only are brought down from the mountain once a year to cut the hair of their manes and tails and treat them from parasites.

Unlike some people think, this is a tradition about love for the horses and communion with nature.
