I was there in 2006 and all of the literature says there is a height difference of 50 - 75 feet between the 2 oceans. That's why you see the ships rising up or dropping down significant distances. I saw it with my own eyes and there's multiple sets of locks. Look it up!
Also, you can take a trans-continental bus trip for $1.50!
One of the big problems is the mixing of Pacific sealife with Atlantic. The barrier to saltwater life is the fresh water from lake Gantun solves this eco-problem. Not a problem? Wait until sea snakes starty showing up in Florida. Other canal proposals were all sea level or close. The passage through fresh water is brief or non existant. Sea life will migrate. We were lucky none of the others were built.
Interesting simulation! Please have a look at the Diagonal Lock simulations on my channel - this is a new lock technology designed for inland waterways.
You people amaze me. The water is the same level on boith sides, it is the difference in the tides that cause the problems. The oceans are \connected to each other so how can they be at different seal levels. Seal level is a term not an actual elevation.
LOL you'd be surprised what 8 inches can do. It certainly wouldn't be a gentle current by any stretch. But yes environmental reason would probably be upmost in the minds.
An 8 inch difference over a distance of 50 miles is nothing. All that means is that you would have a very, very small current going from one ocean to another...not a big deal. The ecological problems are much more significant.
Incredible Panama Canal
